About ME
Tomáš Borl is a Prague-based composer, pianist, and trombonist. He has a bold and quite adventurous compositional development, as he is curious about discovering diversity in music and crossing genre lines.
He is focused on composing music for chamber groups, symphony orchestras, and big bands. His coverage contains solo works and electroacoustics/live electronics works as well. Besides that, he is collaborating with artists from the non-musical field and has been composing music for films, dance performances, and video games.

ABOUT Me as an artist
Tomáš Borl (*1996) began playing the piano at the age of eight and, four years later, also took up the trombone. In 2012, he was admitted to study at the Conservatory in Teplice, specializing in piano, and a year later, also in trombone.
In his fifth year, he performed as a soloist accompanied by the North Bohemian Philharmonic as part of the project “The Best Conservatory Students Present Themselves” and interpreted Sergei Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto. In his final year, he presented himself as both a soloist and a composer during his Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, also accompanied by the North Bohemian Philharmonic.
Currently, he is a composition student at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. During his studies, his works have been performed by various ensembles and soloists, including the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Zlín, Hradec Králové Philharmonic, Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc, Pilsen Philharmonic, South Bohemian Philharmonic, Jazz Dock Orchestra Prague, BERG Orchestra, Norrbotten NEO Sweden, Woodcraft Ensemble, and various chamber ensembles. He has also composed music for several performances and films in collaboration with the dance department, the Film and TV Faculty in Prague, the Academy of Arts, the film production company Nukleon Frame, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (VŠMU), Aalto University in Finland, and the Irish station RTÉ Radio One.
In addition to the Czech Republic, his compositions have been performed abroad, including in Helsinki (Sibelius Academy), Stockholm (Royal College of Music), Amsterdam (MuziekFestival Uistgast), Dallas (Festival of Trombones; Texas Christian University), Salt Lake City (University of Utah), Tokyo (Ko-Ichiro Yamamoto Recital) and Beijing (Beijing Concert Hall). He spent the academic year 2022/23 at the Finnish Sibelius Academy – University of the Arts Helsinki as a participant in the Erasmus+ program, and he is concluding his studies this year at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
ABOUT MY COMPOSING STYLE
Music is my whole-life passion and I have always looked for new challenges and haven’t been afraid of getting new experiences. Even though I’m trying to develop and master already gained skills at the same time.
Due to that my compositional language is constantly developing and changing through time – from my first sketches inspired by folk and classical music, later being heavily influenced by film and video game music, switched to neo-romanticism and jazz period, and lately discovered contemporary and electronic music.
Through time I have grabbed experience from working with different ensembles (orchestras, big bands, chamber ensembles, soloists), exploring the world of electronics (synths, samples, processing the audio, possibilities of mixing and mastering), trying different styles (classical, jazz, contemporary and various cross-genres), collaborating with film directors, video game designers, dance choreographers.
All these experiences have defined my authentic musical language, which has always been based on work with some prominent, leading element – melodic theme/harmonic progression/rhythmic pattern/interesting timbre.
Through time I have mastered different genres, and styles and started to seamlessly cross their borders and create contrasts.
Due to that, my compositions have crossed a decent amount of various compositional methods (i.e.. initially using very melodic phrases or later experimenting with rather ambient textures).
And the whole time I have been fascinated by instrumentation (complexity of sound, and texture – either in the acoustic or electronic field), form (coherence of antithetic elements, creating huge musical blocks), and conjunction between music and other types of arts (picture, performance).
